Macropodidae

Macropodidae is a family of marsupials native to Australia and nearby regions, including kangaroos, wallabies, pademelons, and tree-kangaroos. Most species have large hind legs adapted for hopping.

Marsupial: A mammal whose young are born at an early stage and usually continue developing while attached to a teat. Macropods belong to this mammal group, whose reproductive pattern includes development in a pouch.
Elastic energy storage: The storage and release of mechanical energy in elastic tissues such as tendons during movement. Elastic tendons in the hind limbs help reduce the energetic cost of repeated hopping at speed.
Red kangaroo: The largest living marsupial, native to Australia's arid and semi-arid interior. Its ecology and size make it a prominent example of a large grazing macropod.
Potoroidae: A family of small, mostly hopping marsupials that includes potoroos and bettongs. Potoroids resemble small macropods but belong to a separate family.

Pentapedal locomotion: A slow form of movement in which a kangaroo uses its forelimbs and tail as supports while swinging its hind legs forward. Large kangaroos switch to this movement rather than hopping when traveling slowly.
Eastern grey kangaroo: A large kangaroo found across eastern Australia, including woodland, grassland, and agricultural landscapes. Its abundance brings macropods into frequent contact with farms, roads, and towns.
Koala: An arboreal Australian marsupial that feeds mainly on eucalyptus leaves and belongs to a different family from kangaroos. The koala is a familiar Australian marsupial but is not a macropod.
Hopping: A form of locomotion in which an animal propels itself forward using both hind limbs together. Many macropods use coordinated hind-limb hopping as their primary way to travel.
Embryonic diapause: A temporary pause in embryo development that allows reproduction to respond to conditions or the survival of existing young. Some macropods can pause a new embryo's development while an older offspring occupies the pouch.
