Madhavrao I

Madhavrao I was the fourth Peshwa of the Maratha Empire, governing from 1761 to 1772. He rebuilt Maratha authority after the defeat at Panipat.

Third Battle of Panipat: A 1761 battle in which Ahmad Shah Durrani’s forces defeated the Maratha army in northern India. Its losses created the political and military crisis Madhavrao inherited.
Balaji Baji Rao: The third Peshwa of the Maratha Empire, known as Nana Saheb, who died in 1761. His death after Panipat left his young son Madhavrao as successor.
Nana Fadnavis: A Maratha statesman and administrator who became a leading figure in the confederacy after Madhavrao’s death. He served in Madhavrao’s administration and later helped preserve Maratha political influence.
Narayanrao: Madhavrao’s younger brother, who succeeded him as Peshwa in 1772 and was assassinated in 1773. His succession exposed the instability that followed Madhavrao’s death.
Battle of Rakshasbhuvan: A 1763 battle in which Maratha forces defeated the Nizam of Hyderabad near the Godavari River. The victory demonstrated Madhavrao’s capacity to reverse Maratha setbacks soon after Panipat.
Maratha Confederacy: A network of Maratha states and chiefly houses that shared authority without a permanently centralized government. Madhavrao’s restoration depended on coordinating its powerful regional leaders.
Peshwa: The chief minister who became the effective head of government in the Maratha Empire. Madhavrao inherited an office whose authority had grown beyond ministerial duties.
Mahadji Shinde: A Maratha military leader and statesman who built the power of the Scindia house in northern India. His later rise carried forward the military recovery associated with Madhavrao’s reign.
First Anglo-Maratha War: A war from 1775 to 1782 between the Maratha Confederacy and the British East India Company and its allies. The succession disputes after Madhavrao helped create the crisis that led to this war.
Siege of Dharwad: A prolonged Maratha siege of the Mysore-held fort of Dharwad during the campaigns of the 1770s. It illustrates the difficult southern operations pursued late in Madhavrao’s reign.
