Magazine (firearms)

A device that stores ammunition and feeds cartridges into a firearm for loading into its chamber. Magazines may be detachable or built into the firearm.

Box magazine: A magazine that holds cartridges in a box-shaped housing, usually arranged in one or more columns. Its spring and follower push cartridges upward toward the firearm’s loading path.
Cartridge (firearms): A unit of ammunition combining a projectile, case, propellant, and primer. Magazines store cartridges as complete units, not loose propellant or projectiles.
Detachable magazine: A magazine designed to be removed from a firearm and replaced or reloaded separately. Its removal allows another loaded magazine to be inserted without loading each cartridge individually.
Repeating firearm: A firearm that can fire multiple cartridges before requiring ammunition to be reloaded individually. The magazine became a defining way to supply ammunition to repeating firearms.
Stripper clip: A clip that holds cartridges in a row for pressing into a firearm’s magazine. It speeds loading but is removed after transferring cartridges into the magazine.
Magazine follower: A component inside a magazine that supports cartridges and moves as they are fed. It keeps the cartridge stack aligned as the magazine empties.
Ammunition: Materials and devices used in firearms and other weapons to produce an effect. A magazine is one way of storing and presenting firearm ammunition.
Internal magazine: A magazine built into a firearm rather than designed for routine removal. It stores ammunition in the firearm’s structure, unlike a detachable magazine.
Spencer repeating rifle: A nineteenth-century American repeating rifle that used a tubular magazine in its stock. Its magazine enabled multiple shots before the rifle needed reloading.
Belt (firearms): A linked or connected sequence of cartridges used to feed some firearms. A belt supplies ammunition without storing it in a conventional magazine.
