Maghreb

The Maghreb is a region of northwestern Africa, commonly comprising Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, and sometimes Libya and Mauritania. Its name derives from an Arabic word for the west.

Atlas Mountains: A mountain system stretching across Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia in northwestern Africa. They divide Mediterranean and Saharan environments and shape settlement across much of the Maghreb.
Carthage: An ancient Phoenician-founded city-state in present-day Tunisia that became a major Mediterranean power. Carthage anchored one of the region's earliest influential urban civilizations.
Abd el-Kader: An Algerian religious and military leader who resisted French conquest in the nineteenth century. His resistance became an enduring reference point for Algerian national history.
Mashriq: The eastern Arab world, generally including the Levant and neighboring regions. It is the eastern counterpart to the Maghreb in common Arab regional geography.
Algerian War: The 1954–1962 war between Algerian independence forces and France. Its violence and outcome transformed Algeria and influenced anticolonial politics across the Maghreb.
Sahara: The world's largest hot desert, spanning much of North Africa. Its northern edge runs through the Maghreb, linking the region to trans-Saharan routes.
Roman Africa: The Roman provinces established in North Africa, including territories in present-day Tunisia and Algeria. Roman rule left cities, roads, and institutions across parts of the Maghreb.
Habib Bourguiba: A Tunisian nationalist leader who became the country's first president after independence in 1956. His state-building project shaped postcolonial Tunisia's institutions and public life.
North Africa: The northern part of the African continent, including the Maghreb and regions farther east. The Maghreb is a western subregion within this broader geographic designation.
Moroccan independence: The end of French and Spanish protectorate rule in Morocco in 1956. It established an independent monarchy through a path distinct from Algeria's war.
