Magnetic anisotropy

Magnetic anisotropy is the dependence of a material’s magnetic energy or response on the direction of its magnetization or an applied field. It gives certain directions lower energy than others.

Magnetocrystalline anisotropy: Magnetic anisotropy arising from interactions between a material’s crystal lattice and its magnetization. It selects preferred directions through the coupling of magnetic moments to the crystal structure.
Magnetization: The magnetic dipole moment per unit volume of a material. Anisotropy describes how the energy or response depends on this vector’s direction.
Magnetic recording: The storage of information through controlled magnetic states in a recording medium. Anisotropy helps keep recorded bits stable against thermal fluctuations.
Magnetic isotropy: The condition in which magnetic properties do not depend on direction. It is the limiting opposite of directional magnetic preference.
Magnetostriction: The change in a material’s shape or dimensions when its magnetization changes. Strain couples to magnetization and can create or alter preferred magnetic directions.
Magnetic moment: A vector quantity that measures the strength and direction of a magnetic source. The alignment of microscopic magnetic moments underlies a material’s macroscopic directional behavior.
Magnetic random-access memory: Nonvolatile computer memory that stores data in magnetic states. Its magnetic elements use anisotropy to stabilize and switch stored bits.
Magnetic susceptibility: The proportional response of magnetization to an applied magnetic field in a material. Susceptibility describes field response, while anisotropy describes its dependence on orientation.
Shape anisotropy: Magnetic anisotropy caused by a body’s shape and the resulting demagnetizing field. It can favor magnetization along a particle’s long axis even without crystal effects.
Magnetic domain: A region in a magnetic material where magnetization is approximately uniform. Anisotropy helps determine which directions domain magnetization adopts.
