Magnetic permeability

Magnetic permeability relates magnetic flux density in a material to the magnetic field strength producing it. It characterizes how the material responds to a magnetic field.

Magnetic constitutive relation: A relation connecting magnetic fields and material properties, commonly written as B = μH for a linear isotropic medium. This equation expresses permeability as the proportionality between flux density and field strength.
Permeability of free space: The magnetic permeability assigned to vacuum, denoted μ₀ and used as a reference for relative permeability. It supplies the reference value that turns absolute permeability into a dimensionless ratio.
Magnetic core: A ferromagnetic component that guides and concentrates magnetic flux in an electrical or magnetic device. High permeability can concentrate flux, while core losses and saturation limit useful performance.
Magnetic permittivity: A nonstandard expression sometimes confused with permeability; permittivity describes electric rather than magnetic response. The similar names invite confusion, but electromagnetic constitutive relations assign them to different fields.
Magnetization: The magnetic dipole moment per unit volume of a material. A material's magnetization contributes to its magnetic flux density and shapes its effective permeability.
Relative permeability: The ratio of a material's permeability to the permeability of free space. This dimensionless quantity lets material responses be compared without units.
Inductor: A passive electrical component that stores energy in a magnetic field when current flows through it. Core permeability influences inductance, size, and the onset of saturation.
Electrical conductivity: A measure of how readily electric charge moves through a material under an electric field. Conductivity, unlike permeability, characterizes electrical transport rather than magnetic response.
Magnetic susceptibility: A dimensionless measure of how much a material becomes magnetized in response to an applied magnetic field. For linear materials, susceptibility determines permeability relative to free space.
Differential permeability: The local slope of magnetic flux density against magnetic field strength at a specified operating point. It describes small field changes when a nonlinear material lacks one fixed permeability.
