Magnetic reconnection

Magnetic reconnection is a plasma process in which magnetic-field topology changes, converting stored magnetic energy into particle energy, heat, and bulk motion.

Magnetic X-point: A location where magnetic field lines converge and cross in a two-dimensional magnetic configuration. Reconnection commonly concentrates field restructuring and plasma flows around this geometry.
Magnetic field: A vector field that exerts forces on moving electric charges and magnetic materials. Its changing configuration supplies the magnetic energy and topology involved in reconnection.
Solar flare: A sudden release of energy in the Sun's atmosphere, producing radiation, energetic particles, and heated plasma. Reconnection is a leading explanation for the rapid energy release in many solar flares.
Hannes Alfvén: A Swedish physicist who developed foundational ideas in magnetohydrodynamics and plasma physics. His work on magnetized plasmas supplied essential theory for reconnection studies.
Sweet–Parker model: A classical model of steady reconnection in a long, thin resistive current sheet. It predicts slow reconnection, highlighting the mismatch with many rapid events.
Current sheet: A narrow region in plasma where magnetic field direction changes sharply and electric current is concentrated. Oppositely directed fields meet here, creating the thin layer where reconnection proceeds.
Plasma: An ionized gas containing charged particles whose collective behavior is influenced by electromagnetic fields. Reconnection occurs in plasma, where charged particles carry currents and respond to changing fields.
Coronal mass ejection: A large eruption of magnetized plasma from the Sun's outer atmosphere into interplanetary space. Reconnection beneath erupting magnetic structures can power and reshape these eruptions.
Ludwig Biermann: A German astrophysicist who proposed that solar-wind particles interact with Earth's magnetic field. His proposal helped motivate the magnetospheric setting in which reconnection was later recognized.
Petschek model: A model of fast magnetic reconnection with a compact diffusion region and standing slow-mode shocks. It offers much faster rates than the extended Sweet–Parker current sheet.
