Magnetic shielding

Magnetic shielding is the reduction or redirection of magnetic fields in a region using materials or engineered structures. It can protect sensitive equipment or confine fields to a desired area.

Magnetic permeability: A measure of how a material responds to and supports a magnetic field. High-permeability materials provide low-reluctance paths that divert magnetic flux around a protected region.
Magnetic field: A vector field produced by magnets, electric currents, and changing electric fields. Shielding changes the field's distribution rather than eliminating magnetism as a physical phenomenon.
Magnetically shielded room: An enclosed space built to reduce external magnetic fields, often using high-permeability layers and conductive sheets. These rooms provide low-field environments for sensitive measurements and experiments.
Magnetic field cancellation: The deliberate superposition of fields to reduce the net field in a target region. Cancellation creates an opposing field, whereas passive shielding redirects or attenuates the original field.
Eddy current: A circulating electric current induced within a conductor by a changing magnetic field. These currents generate opposing fields that attenuate time-varying magnetic interference.
Ferromagnetism: A form of magnetism in which material domains align to produce strong, persistent magnetization. Ferromagnetic materials can guide flux, but their own magnetization can complicate shielding.
Magnetometer: An instrument that measures the strength or direction of a magnetic field. Shielding reduces environmental interference that can overwhelm precise magnetic measurements.
Electromagnetic shielding: The reduction of electromagnetic fields in a region using conductive or absorptive barriers. Magnetic shielding is one part of the broader problem of controlling electromagnetic interference.
Lenz's law: The principle that induced currents produce magnetic fields opposing the change that created them. It explains why conductive shields oppose changing fields but do little against static fields.
Electrical conductivity: A material property describing how readily electric charge moves through it. Conductivity controls the induced currents that shield against changing magnetic fields.
