Mahajanapadas

The Mahajanapadas were sixteen major kingdoms and oligarchic republics of northern India that flourished around the sixth century BCE. Their growth marked a shift toward larger states, cities, and organized political power.

Janapada: A territorial community or polity formed by a people settling in a region of ancient India. Mahajanapadas were larger, more powerful states that grew from earlier janapada territories.
Magadha: An ancient kingdom in eastern India that became the dominant power in the middle Gangetic plain. Its expansion made it the most successful of the Mahajanapadas.
Bimbisara: A king of Magadha from the Haryanka dynasty, traditionally dated to the sixth or fifth century BCE. His conquests and alliances helped establish Magadha’s early dominance.
Nanda Empire: An ancient Indian empire that ruled Magadha before the rise of the Mauryas. The Nandas inherited and enlarged the Magadhan power built among the Mahajanapadas.
Gana-sangha: An ancient Indian polity governed by an assembly of clan leaders rather than a hereditary monarch. Several Mahajanapadas, including Vrijji, used this oligarchic form of government.
Kosala: An ancient kingdom in the middle Gangetic plain, centered around the region of modern Uttar Pradesh. Kosala was a major rival of Magadha and controlled important northern territories.
Ajatashatru: A king of Magadha who expanded its power during the fifth century BCE. His campaigns against Kosala and Vajji advanced Magadha’s territorial growth.
Maurya Empire: An empire founded by Chandragupta Maurya that unified much of the Indian subcontinent. Its formation followed the consolidation of power in Magadha and its neighboring states.
Monarchy: A system of government in which a monarch holds supreme political authority. Many Mahajanapadas were hereditary kingdoms ruled by kings.
Vajji: A confederacy of clans in northern Bihar, with the Licchavis as its leading group. Vajji represents the oligarchic confederacies among the Mahajanapadas.
