Mahmoud Darwish

Mahmoud Darwish (1941–2008) was a Palestinian poet and author whose work explored exile, identity, memory, and Palestinian national experience.

Palestinian diaspora: The communities of Palestinians living outside their ancestral homeland, formed through successive waves of displacement and migration. Exile in Darwish’s poetry reflects the dispersed lives of Palestinians after 1948.
Identity Card (poem): A 1964 poem by Darwish in which a Palestinian speaker confronts an official demand to state his identity. Its defiant refrain made the young poet widely known across the Arab world.
Fady Joudah: A Palestinian American poet and physician known for translating contemporary Arabic poetry into English. His translations brought several late Darwish collections into English.
Palestinian national identity: A shared sense of peoplehood shaped by Palestinian history, culture, political claims, and collective memory. His poems gave memorable language to identity formed under displacement and occupation.
