Mahmud II

Mahmud II was Ottoman sultan from 1808 to 1839. He strengthened central rule and transformed the empire’s military, administration, education, and legal institutions.

Auspicious Incident: The 1826 destruction of the Janissary corps by Mahmud II’s forces in Constantinople. It removed the military institution that had repeatedly obstructed his reforms.
Asakir-i Mansure-i Muhammediye: The new Ottoman infantry army established by Mahmud II in 1826 after the Janissaries were abolished. It supplied the military foundation for the sultan’s post-Janissary state.
Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca: The 1774 treaty that ended the Russo-Turkish War and imposed major territorial and political losses on the Ottoman Empire. Its consequences formed part of the strategic pressure for military and state reform.
Alemdar Mustafa Pasha: An Ottoman military commander and statesman who helped place Mahmud II on the throne in 1808. He restored Mahmud after the 1807 upheaval, then died defending the new sultan’s authority.
Nizam-i Cedid: Selim III’s program of new military forces and administrative reforms, begun in the late eighteenth century. It was Mahmud’s key reform precedent, but its overthrow showed the danger of reform without secure power.

Mustafa IV: Ottoman sultan from 1807 to 1808 who sought to reverse Selim III’s reforms. His brief reign preceded Mahmud’s accession and embodied the reaction Mahmud had to overcome.
Ottoman constitutionalism: Movements and institutions seeking to limit Ottoman rule through constitutional law and representative government. Mahmud strengthened centralized monarchy rather than establishing constitutional limits on the sultan.
