Mahmud of Ghazni

Mahmud of Ghazni was the Ghaznavid sultan from 998 to 1030. He expanded his empire across Iran, Afghanistan, and northern India through conquest and patronage.

Ghaznavid dynasty: A Persianate Muslim dynasty that ruled parts of Central and South Asia from the late tenth to the twelfth century. Mahmud inherited its throne and made its military state an empire.
Battle of Peshawar (1001): A battle in which Mahmud defeated the Hindu Shahi ruler Jayapala near Peshawar. This victory opened a lasting route for Ghaznavid expansion into the Punjab.
Al-Biruni: A polymath from Khwarazm who wrote works on astronomy, mathematics, history, and Indian society. Mahmud’s conquest of Khwarazm brought Al-Biruni into his courtly world.
Somnath temple: A Hindu temple on the coast of Gujarat, attacked by Mahmud during his campaign of 1025–1026. The raid became the most famous and contested episode of his Indian campaigns.
Ghaznavid Empire: The empire ruled by the Ghaznavid dynasty across parts of Iran, Afghanistan, and South Asia. Mahmud’s conquests brought the empire to the height of its territorial reach.

Lahore: A major city in present-day Pakistan that became an important Ghaznavid center in the Punjab. Ghaznavid rule helped establish Lahore as a political and cultural hub.
Delhi Sultanate: A succession of Muslim dynasties that ruled much of northern India from Delhi between 1206 and 1526. Ghaznavid expansion helped establish precedents for later Muslim rule in northern India.
