Maiduguri
Maiduguri is the capital and largest city of Borno State in northeastern Nigeria. It is a major commercial and transport center near Lake Chad.
Borno Empire: A state that ruled parts of the Lake Chad region from the late 14th century until the 19th century. Maiduguri became the capital of a successor polity in the Borno region.
Borno State: A state in northeastern Nigeria, bordering Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. Maiduguri is Borno State’s capital and principal urban center.
Boko Haram insurgency: An armed Islamist insurgency in northeastern Nigeria and neighboring countries, led principally by Boko Haram and its offshoots. The insurgency has repeatedly threatened Maiduguri and reshaped life across Borno State.

Internally displaced person: A person forced to leave home by conflict, violence, disaster, or other danger without crossing an international border. Maiduguri has hosted large numbers of people displaced by conflict in northeastern Nigeria.
Chad: A landlocked country in central Africa, bordering Nigeria and the Lake Chad basin. Maiduguri’s commerce and population have long been connected to Chad across the border.
British colonial Nigeria: The period of British political control over Nigeria, which ended with independence in 1960. British authorities established Maiduguri as an administrative center in the region.
