Makalu

Makalu is an 8,485-meter Himalayan peak on the Nepal–China border and the world’s fifth-highest mountain. Its steep, isolated pyramid rises in the eastern Himalaya.

Himalayas: The Himalayan mountain system stretches across South Asia and contains the world's highest peaks. Makalu is one of the high peaks formed within this mountain system.
Makalu-La: Makalu-La is a high mountain pass on Makalu's northwest ridge, connecting the mountain's upper terrain with the Tibetan side. The pass is a key feature of routes approaching Makalu's upper slopes.
Lionel Terray: Lionel Terray was a French mountaineer who took part in the first ascent of Makalu. He was a leading member of the 1955 French expedition that reached the summit.
Mount Everest: Mount Everest is a 8,848.86-meter Himalayan peak on the Nepal–China border and Earth's highest mountain above sea level. Everest surpasses Makalu in elevation and lies nearby in the Mahalangur Himal.
Mahalangur Himal: Mahalangur Himal is a Himalayan subrange containing Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu. This subrange places Makalu among the region's tightly grouped 8,000-meter peaks.
Makalu-Barun Glacier: Makalu-Barun Glacier is a large glacier flowing from the Makalu massif into Barun Valley. Its crevasses and changing ice form a major obstacle on the standard Nepalese approach.
Jean Couzy: Jean Couzy was a French mountaineer who made the first ascent of Makalu in 1955. He and Lionel Terray reached the summit first on the expedition's opening summit day.
Kangchenjunga: Kangchenjunga is a 8,586-meter Himalayan massif on the Nepal–India border and the world's third-highest mountain. It is one of the few mountains higher than Makalu.
Makalu-Barun National Park: Makalu-Barun National Park is a protected area in eastern Nepal encompassing Makalu and the Barun Valley. The park protects the Nepalese approaches and ecosystems around the mountain.
High-altitude mountaineering: High-altitude mountaineering is climbing at elevations where reduced oxygen impairs human performance. Above 8,000 meters, climbers face extreme physiological limits on Makalu.
