Makhzen

The Moroccan state apparatus and governing elite organized around the monarch and central administration. The term also names the historical system through which rulers extended authority across Morocco.

Sultan: A ruler in several Muslim states, including Morocco before the establishment of the monarchy's current title. The sultan historically headed the Makhzen and embodied its central authority.
Idrisid dynasty: The first major Islamic dynasty in Morocco, founded in the late eighth century. Idrisid rule established an early Moroccan center of dynastic and religious authority.
Moulay Ismail: An Alaouite sultan who ruled Morocco from 1672 to 1727. His long reign expanded royal control and built a powerful central administration.
Moroccan nationalism: A political movement seeking Moroccan sovereignty and national unity, especially under French and Spanish rule. Nationalists contested colonial power while negotiating the monarchy's role in sovereignty.
Political clientelism: A political system in which patrons distribute benefits in exchange for support or loyalty. Patronage networks have been one way Makhzen authority connects officials and local actors.
Beyʿa: An oath of allegiance through which a community recognizes a ruler's authority. The bayʿa expressed the reciprocal bond between Morocco's ruler and the political community.
Almoravid dynasty: A Berber Muslim dynasty that ruled Morocco and parts of Iberia in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Almoravid expansion helped build centralized rule across a broad Moroccan territory.
Mohammed V of Morocco: The Moroccan sultan and king who reigned during the protectorate's end and independence. His leadership linked the monarchy to the nationalist struggle and independent state.
Moroccan independence: The restoration of Moroccan sovereignty in 1956 after French and Spanish protectorate rule. Independence transferred the Makhzen into the institutions of a modern sovereign state.
Patrimonialism: A form of rule that treats public authority as an extension of a ruler's household or personal power. The concept helps explain personal ties within historical Makhzen governance.
