Malacca

Malacca is a historic port city on the Malay Peninsula whose control of the Strait of Malacca made it a major center of Asian trade and Portuguese colonial activity.

Sultanate of Malacca: A Malay Muslim state that ruled Malacca and surrounding territories from the fifteenth century until the Portuguese conquest in 1511. The sultanate established the city’s political power and commercial reach before Portuguese rule.

Strait of Malacca: A narrow sea passage between the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra connecting the Indian Ocean with the South China Sea. The city’s position beside this passage made it valuable to rulers seeking to control maritime trade.
Portuguese Malacca: The Portuguese-controlled city and surrounding territory established after the conquest of Malacca in 1511. Portuguese administration turned the port into a fortified center of trade and imperial rule.
