Malachite

Malachite is a green copper carbonate hydroxide mineral with formula Cu₂CO₃(OH)₂. Its vivid color and banded patterns make it distinctive as an ornamental stone and copper ore.

Copper: Copper is a reddish metallic chemical element with symbol Cu and atomic number 29. Copper supplies the metal ions that give malachite its characteristic green color.
Oxidation zone: An oxidation zone is the near-surface part of an ore deposit altered by oxygenated water. Malachite commonly develops where copper sulfides weather in this zone.
Copper ore: Copper ore is rock or mineral material mined because its copper can be extracted economically. Malachite can be smelted as a secondary source of copper.
Malachite Room: The Malachite Room is a lavishly decorated interior in the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg. Its columns and furnishings display large quantities of polished malachite.
Carbonate minerals: Carbonate minerals contain carbonate ions bonded to metal cations or other positively charged groups. Malachite belongs to this mineral family through its carbonate component.
Weathering: Weathering is the breakdown and chemical alteration of rocks and minerals at or near Earth’s surface. Weathering releases copper that can be recombined into malachite.
Malachite green: Malachite green is a synthetic triphenylmethane dye, unrelated chemically to the mineral malachite. The dye shares the mineral’s name and color but is not made from it.
Malachite Vase: The Malachite Vase is a monumental nineteenth-century ornamental vessel in the Hermitage Museum. It demonstrates the use of thin malachite veneers over a structural stone core.
Hydroxide minerals: Hydroxide minerals contain hydroxide ions as essential components of their crystal structures. Hydroxide is the second anionic component in malachite’s formula.
Azurite: Azurite is a deep-blue copper carbonate hydroxide mineral with formula Cu₃(CO₃)₂(OH)₂. Changing water chemistry can convert azurite into malachite.
