Malagasy nationalism

Malagasy nationalism is the movement for political unity, self-determination, and national identity in Madagascar, shaped by resistance to French rule and the struggle over the island’s political future.

Merina Kingdom: A highland kingdom that expanded across much of Madagascar before France established colonial rule. Its political expansion gave later nationalists a precedent for island-wide unity.
