Malawi

Malawi is a landlocked country in southeastern Africa, bordered by Tanzania, Zambia, and Mozambique. Lake Malawi occupies much of its eastern border and shapes its ecology, economy, and settlement.

Lake Malawi: A large East African lake forming much of Malawi’s eastern border and containing exceptionally diverse freshwater life. Its fisheries, transport routes, and shoreline communities are central to Malawi’s geography.
Maravi Empire: A historic Central African state that flourished in the region of present-day Malawi from roughly the fifteenth century. The country’s name and early political history are associated with this regional kingdom.
Agriculture in Malawi: The cultivation of crops and raising of livestock that support livelihoods and the economy in Malawi. Smallholder farming and rain-fed maize production make harvests sensitive to weather and policy.

1993 Malawi referendum: A national referendum in which Malawians voted to end the country’s one-party political system. Its result opened the way to multiparty elections and constitutional change.
East African Rift: A continental rift system where tectonic plates are pulling apart across eastern Africa. Its tectonic history shaped Lake Malawi and the country’s dramatic escarpments.
Nyasaland: The British protectorate that preceded Malawi’s independence in 1964. Its colonial administration established the territory that became Malawi.
