Malay world

The Malay world is a broad cultural and historical region connected by Malay language, maritime trade, and shared traditions across Southeast Asia. Its boundaries shift with historical period and definition.

Malay language: A major Austronesian language with standardized varieties used across Southeast Asia. Shared Malay speech and writing helped connect communities across the region.
Austronesian expansion: The prehistoric dispersal of Austronesian-speaking communities from Taiwan across Island Southeast Asia and the Pacific. It provides deep linguistic and settlement histories for many Malay-world communities.
Parameswara: A ruler traditionally credited with founding Melaka in the early fifteenth century. His foundation story anchors later accounts of Melaka’s rise as a Malay center.
British Malaya: The British-administered territories of the Malay Peninsula and nearby islands before the formation of Malaysia. Colonial rule recast parts of the Malay world into bounded administrative territories.
Nusantara: A term for the Indonesian archipelago and, in some uses, a broader maritime Southeast Asian region. Its geographic and political scope overlaps with, but does not match, the Malay world.
Austronesian peoples: Peoples whose languages belong to the Austronesian language family, distributed across the Indian and Pacific oceans. Many communities associated with the Malay world speak Austronesian languages.
Srivijaya: A maritime polity centered in Sumatra that dominated important trade routes from roughly the seventh to eleventh centuries. Its port network helped establish Sumatra as a major center of regional exchange.
Tun Seri Lanang: A seventeenth-century Malay statesman and author associated with the Sulalatus Salatin. His chronicle preserved influential narratives of Malay kingship and history.
Dutch East Indies: The Dutch colonial territory that became the modern state of Indonesia. Its borders divided a formerly connected maritime region into a colonial political unit.
Malesia: A biogeographic region of Southeast Asia and nearby islands defined by plant distribution. The similar name describes a botanical region, not a Malay-speaking cultural sphere.
