Malietoa Tanumafili II

Malietoa Tanumafili II was a Samoan paramount chief and head of state from independence in 1962 until his death in 2007. He was one of Samoa’s four chiefly titleholders who jointly served as head of state until 1963, then held the office alone.

Fiame Mata'afa Faumuina Mulinu'u II: A Samoan paramount chief and politician who served as the country’s first prime minister from 1959 to 1970. He led the government during Tanumafili’s early years as head of state.
