Malintzin

Malintzin was an Indigenous woman who interpreted and mediated for Hernán Cortés during the Spanish conquest of Mexico. Known also as Doña Marina and La Malinche, she helped communication across Nahuatl, Maya, and Spanish.

Hernán Cortés: Hernán Cortés was a Spanish conquistador who led the expedition that toppled the Mexica Empire. She interpreted and negotiated for Cortés as his expedition advanced through central Mexico.
Nahuatl: Nahuatl is a Uto-Aztecan language historically spoken across central Mexico. It was Malintzin's language of communication with many Mexica and other Nahuatl-speaking communities.
Painala: Painala is the place named in Spanish accounts as Malintzin's birthplace in the Gulf Coast region. Accounts associate her birth with this community before her enslavement and transfer.
Mestizaje: Mestizaje is the historical and cultural process of mixture among Indigenous, European, and other populations in the Americas. Malintzin's relationship with Cortés and their son became entangled with narratives of Mexican mixed ancestry.
Jeronimo de Aguilar: Jeronimo de Aguilar was a Spanish Franciscan who lived among Maya-speaking communities after a shipwreck. Together they enabled communication from Nahuatl through Maya to Spanish in early encounters.
Chontal Maya: Chontal Maya is a Mayan language spoken in parts of southeastern Mexico. Malintzin and Aguilar used Maya as an intermediary language before Cortés learned Spanish.
Maya peoples: Maya peoples are Indigenous communities with diverse languages and histories across Mesoamerica. Malintzin entered Cortés's orbit in a region where Maya languages were widely spoken.
Malinchismo: Malinchismo is a Mexican term for preference toward foreign influence or culture over local traditions. The term derives from her name and turns her contested reputation into a critique of cultural betrayal.
Moctezuma II: Moctezuma II was the Mexica ruler when Cortés and his allies entered Tenochtitlan in 1519. Malintzin interpreted during encounters between Cortés and the Mexica ruler.
Interpreting: Interpreting is the oral or signed translation of speech between languages. Her work illustrates how interpreting can shape diplomacy and military decisions.
