Malleus

The malleus is a small middle-ear bone that connects to the eardrum and transmits its vibrations to the incus.

Tympanic membrane: The thin membrane separating the outer ear from the middle ear that vibrates in response to sound. The malleus’s handle is attached to this membrane and receives its motion.
Middle ear: The air-filled space behind the eardrum containing the auditory ossicles. The malleus is one of the middle ear’s three auditory bones.
Ossicular chain disruption: A break or abnormal separation in the middle-ear bones that impairs sound transmission. Damage involving the malleus can interrupt the chain’s mechanical continuity.
Ossicle development: The embryonic formation of the malleus, incus, and stapes from pharyngeal arch tissues. The malleus develops from first pharyngeal arch structures.
Incus: The middle-ear ossicle between the malleus and stapes that passes vibrations onward. The malleus articulates with the incus at its head.

Ossiculoplasty: Surgery that repairs or reconstructs the middle-ear ossicles to improve sound transmission. Surgeons may repair or replace a damaged malleus during reconstruction.
Meckel's cartilage: An embryonic cartilage bar of the first pharyngeal arch that contributes to jaw development and the malleus. Its dorsal part gives rise to the malleus during development.
Malleoincudal joint: The synovial joint connecting the head of the malleus to the body of the incus. This joint transmits malleus motion to the next ossicle.
Malleus anatomy: The parts of the malleus, including its head, neck, handle, and processes. These landmarks describe the structure that anchors the eardrum and articulates with the incus.
