Malonic acid

Malonic acid is a three-carbon dicarboxylic acid, HOOC–CH₂–COOH, with formula C₃H₄O₄. Its central methylene group makes it useful in carbon–carbon bond-forming reactions.

Malonic ester synthesis: A carbon–carbon bond-forming method that alkylates malonic ester and then hydrolyzes and decarboxylates it. This classic sequence exploits the acidity of malonate esters to build substituted carboxylic acids.
Barbituric acid: A pyrimidine-derived compound formed by condensing urea with malonic acid or a derivative. Its ring construction illustrates malonic acid's use as a building block for nitrogen-containing compounds.
Carboxylic acid: An organic compound containing one or more carboxyl groups, –COOH. Malonic acid belongs to this compound family and contains two carboxyl groups.
Succinic acid: A four-carbon dicarboxylic acid with formula C₄H₆O₄ and two adjacent carboxyl groups. Its carboxyl groups are separated by two methylene units, unlike malonic acid's single central methylene.
Decarboxylation: A chemical reaction that removes a carboxyl group as carbon dioxide. Heating malonic acid derivatives can expel carbon dioxide after substitution at the central carbon.
Meldrum's acid: A cyclic acetal derivative of malonic acid used as a versatile synthetic reagent. Its activated methylene and controlled decarboxylation extend malonic acid chemistry.
Dicarboxylic acid: An organic acid containing two carboxyl groups. This class describes malonic acid's defining functional-group arrangement.
Oxalic acid: A two-carbon dicarboxylic acid with formula C₂H₂O₄ and directly adjacent carboxyl groups. It has no intervening methylene group, so it lacks malonic acid's characteristic active carbon.
Malonate: The conjugate base or an ester-derived anion of malonic acid, depending on context. Deprotonation gives a resonance-stabilized nucleophile that forms carbon–carbon bonds.
Diethyl malonate: The diethyl ester of malonic acid, widely used in organic synthesis. This stable, readily alkylated derivative is the standard reagent in malonic ester synthesis.
