Mamluk–Portuguese conflicts

A series of naval and diplomatic confrontations between the Mamluk Sultanate and Portugal over Red Sea and Indian Ocean trade in the early 16th century.

Portuguese India Armadas: Portuguese fleets sent annually around Africa to maintain Portugal’s Asian maritime empire. Their patrols and attacks carried Portuguese pressure into the Indian Ocean and Red Sea.
Portuguese discovery of the sea route to India: The establishment of a direct European sea route to India around the Cape of Good Hope, achieved by Vasco da Gama’s voyage of 1497–1499. It allowed Portuguese ships to challenge established commerce without crossing Mamluk territory.
Qansuh al-Ghuri: The Mamluk sultan of Egypt and Syria from 1501 until his death in 1516. He sponsored the Mamluk naval effort against Portugal and sought cooperation with Indian Ocean powers.
Ottoman–Mamluk War: The 1516–1517 conflict in which the Ottoman Empire conquered the Mamluk Sultanate. The war ended independent Mamluk rule before its naval contest with Portugal could be renewed.
Battle of Chaul: A 1508 naval battle off western India in which a Mamluk-Gujarati fleet defeated the Portuguese. The victory briefly checked Portuguese expansion and helped prompt a larger Mamluk expedition.
Vasco da Gama: A Portuguese navigator whose 1497–1499 voyage reached India by sailing around southern Africa. His route opened the maritime channel that brought Portugal into competition with Mamluk trade interests.
Al-Ashraf Qansuh: A name used for the Mamluk sultan Qansuh al-Ghuri, who ruled Egypt and Syria from 1501 to 1516. This alternate form can cause confusion when identifying the ruler behind Mamluk policy.
Ottoman Empire: A state centered in Anatolia that grew into a major empire across southeastern Europe, western Asia, and North Africa. Ottoman conquest transferred Egypt and its strategic Red Sea position to a new power.
Battle of Diu: A 1509 naval battle off Gujarat in which Portugal defeated a coalition including Mamluk forces. Its outcome broke the coalition’s attempt to dislodge Portuguese power in the western Indian Ocean.
Mamluk Sultanate: A state ruled from Egypt and Syria by a military elite known as the Mamluks, from 1250 to 1517. Its revenues and strategic position made the Portuguese challenge a matter of state survival.
