Mamluk Sultanate

A medieval Muslim state ruled by Mamluk military elites, centered in Egypt and Syria from 1250 until the Ottoman conquest in 1517.

Mamluk: A soldier of slave origin trained for military service, especially in Islamic states. Mamluks formed the military elite from which the sultanate’s rulers emerged.
Ayyubid dynasty: A Muslim dynasty that ruled Egypt, Syria, and neighboring lands from the late 12th to mid-13th century. Mamluk officers took control in Egypt as Ayyubid rule collapsed.
Baibars: A Mamluk sultan who ruled from 1260 to 1277 and expanded the state’s power. He strengthened central authority and fought Mongol and crusader forces.
Crusader states: The Latin Christian polities established in the eastern Mediterranean during the Crusades. Mamluk campaigns dismantled the remaining mainland crusader strongholds.
Cairo: The capital of Egypt and one of the largest cities of the medieval Islamic world. Mamluk patronage made Cairo a political, religious, and architectural center.
Iqta: A grant of land revenue assigned by a ruler, often in return for military service. Iqta assignments helped finance the cavalry and bind commanders to the state.
Shajar al-Durr: A ruler of Egypt in 1250 who briefly became the first sovereign of the Mamluk regime. Her accession marked the transition from Ayyubid authority to Mamluk rule.
Qalawun: A Mamluk sultan who ruled from 1279 to 1290 and founded a powerful ruling dynasty. His descendants held the throne for decades, though military elites retained real power.
Siege of Acre (1291): The 1291 Mamluk siege that captured Acre, the last major crusader stronghold on the Levantine coast. Its fall ended the principal crusader presence on the mainland.
Al-Azhar Mosque: A mosque and center of Islamic learning in Cairo, founded in the 10th century. Mamluk rulers endowed and renovated it as part of their support for Sunni institutions.
