Mammoth Steppe

The Mammoth Steppe was a widespread, cold, dry Pleistocene grassland ecosystem across northern Eurasia and North America, supporting abundant large herbivores.

Pleistocene: The geological epoch from about 2.58 million to 11,700 years ago, marked by repeated glaciations. The Mammoth Steppe flourished during this epoch’s cold, dry intervals.
Herbivory: The consumption of plant material by animals. Large grazers maintained open vegetation by repeatedly eating grasses and shrubs.
Woolly mammoth: An extinct elephant species adapted to cold Pleistocene environments across northern Eurasia and North America. This iconic grazer gave the ecosystem its common name.
Late Pleistocene megafauna extinctions: The loss of many large animal species near the end of the Pleistocene. The decline of large grazers transformed the steppe’s food webs.
Permafrost: Ground that remains at or below 0°C for at least two consecutive years. Extensive frozen ground shaped drainage and soils across much of the steppe.
Dung: Animal feces, which return nutrients and organic matter to ecosystems. Herbivore waste rapidly recycled nutrients across extensive grazing grounds.
Steppe bison: An extinct bison species widespread across Pleistocene grasslands of Eurasia and North America. Its fossils document the large grazing herds that occupied the steppe.
Younger Dryas: A return to near-glacial conditions in parts of the Northern Hemisphere about 12,900–11,700 years ago. This abrupt cooling coincided with major ecological shifts near the steppe’s end.
Loess: Fine, wind-blown sediment deposited in thick, often fertile layers. Dust accumulation helped form the steppe’s mineral-rich soils.
Arctic climate: The climate of high northern latitudes, characterized by long cold winters and short summers. Cold conditions constrained trees while seasonal growth supported grasses and forbs.
