Man-to-man defense

A defensive strategy in which each defender is assigned to guard a particular opponent rather than an area. Assignments may change as opponents move or the play develops.

On-ball defense: Defense by the player directly guarding the opponent who has the ball. The assigned defender pressures the ball handler while limiting drives and passes.
Zone defense: A defensive strategy in which players guard areas of the court rather than staying assigned to particular opponents. It replaces fixed individual matchups with responsibility for zones and whoever enters them.
Basketball defense: The coordinated actions and strategies used to prevent scoring in basketball. Basketball uses man-to-man defense to guard opponents across the court and around screens.
Full-court man-to-man defense: A basketball defense in which players guard assigned opponents across the entire court. It extends individual pressure to the opponents' backcourt and ball advancement.
Off-ball defense: Defensive positioning by players guarding opponents who do not have the ball. Defenders away from the ball protect passing lanes and remain ready to help.
Box-and-one defense: A hybrid defense using four players in a zone and one player in man-to-man coverage. It combines individual coverage of one opponent with zone protection by the other defenders.
Association football tactics: The planned formations and coordinated actions teams use in association football. In football, individual marking can be applied to particular opponents within a broader team shape.
Half-court man-to-man defense: A basketball defense in which defenders guard assigned opponents after the offense crosses into the frontcourt. It applies individual matchups within a compact defensive half-court formation.
Help defense: A defensive action in which a player leaves an assignment temporarily to assist a teammate against an immediate threat. A defender may cover a teammate's opponent when the assigned defender is beaten.
Triangle-and-two defense: A hybrid defense in which three players form a zone triangle and two guard opponents individually. It shows how man-to-man assignments can be combined with zone coverage.
