Manbij

Manbij is a city in northern Syria’s Aleppo Governorate, west of the Euphrates River. Its strategic location has made it a crossroads of regional trade and conflict.

Hierapolis Bambyce: An ancient city and religious center at the site of modern Manbij, known for worship of the goddess Atargatis. This was Manbij’s ancient predecessor and a major sanctuary in the region.

Manbij offensive: A Turkish-backed Syrian National Army operation that captured Manbij from the Syrian Democratic Forces in December 2024. The offensive marked a major change in control of the city after years of SDF administration.
Seleucid Empire: A Hellenistic empire founded by Seleucus I Nicator that ruled much of western Asia after Alexander the Great’s death. The Seleucids developed Hierapolis Bambyce as a major city in their Syrian domains.
Tishrin Dam: A hydroelectric dam on the Euphrates in northern Syria, completed in the 1990s. The dam and its crossing provide an important connection east of Manbij.
