Manchukuo

Manchukuo was a Japanese-controlled state established in Manchuria in 1932 and dissolved in 1945. Japan presented it as an independent monarchy under Puyi, but Japanese authorities controlled its government and military.

Mukden Incident: A 1931 explosion on the South Manchuria Railway that Japanese officers used to justify occupying Manchuria. The staged railway explosion supplied Japan’s pretext for the occupation that produced Manchukuo.
Puyi: The last emperor of China, installed by Japan as Manchukuo’s chief executive and later emperor. His throne gave Manchukuo the appearance of dynastic legitimacy while Japanese officials held decisive power.
Nobusuke Kishi: A Japanese bureaucrat who directed industrial development in Manchuria before becoming a senior postwar politician. His work in the region connected Manchukuo’s industrial expansion with Japanese state planning.
Second Sino-Japanese War: The war between China and Japan that began in 1937 and became part of the wider Second World War. Manchukuo became a major Japanese base and a source of troops and resources during the war.
Japanese Empire: The empire ruled by Japan from the late nineteenth century until its defeat in 1945. Manchukuo functioned as a Japanese satellite within the empire’s expanding continental system.
Japanese invasion of Manchuria: Japan’s 1931–1932 military seizure of Manchuria from China. The invasion established the territorial and military control on which Manchukuo depended.
Kwantung Army: The Imperial Japanese Army force stationed in and around Japan’s leased territory in southern Manchuria. Its officers shaped Manchukuo’s creation and exercised power beyond ordinary civilian oversight.
Seishirō Itagaki: A Japanese Army officer involved in the Manchurian Incident and the establishment of Manchukuo. He was among the officers who helped turn the occupation into a separate state.
League of Nations: An international organization founded after the First World War to promote cooperation and collective security. Its inability to reverse Japan’s seizure of Manchuria exposed the limits of collective security.
Republic of China: The Chinese state founded in 1912, which claimed sovereignty over Manchuria during Manchukuo’s existence. China rejected Manchukuo’s separation and treated the territory as occupied Chinese land.
