Mandara Mountains

The Mandara Mountains are a volcanic range along the Nigeria–Cameroon border, rising above the surrounding plains. Their steep terrain and varied environments have shaped settlement, farming, and political life.

Cameroon Volcanic Line: A chain of volcanic and tectonic features extending from the Gulf of Guinea across Cameroon into the interior. The Mandara Mountains form part of this broader volcanic alignment.
Terraced Farming: A method of farming that creates level steps on sloping land to reduce erosion and retain water. Terraces have long enabled cultivation on steep Mandara slopes.
Mafa people: An ethnic group whose communities are concentrated in the Mandara Mountains of northern Cameroon. Mafa communities are among the range’s prominent mountain societies.
Rhumsiki: A village in northern Cameroon known for striking volcanic plugs in the Mandara highlands. Its rock pinnacles are among the range’s best-known landscapes.
Basalt: A dark, fine-grained volcanic rock formed when basaltic lava cools rapidly at or near Earth’s surface. Basaltic rocks contribute to the range’s volcanic landscape.
Millet: A group of small-seeded cereal crops suited to hot, dry growing conditions. Millet is a staple crop in the range’s dry farming systems.
Mofu people: An ethnic group living in the Mandara Mountains and adjacent areas of northern Cameroon. Mofu settlements occupy parts of the range’s central highlands.
Kapsiki Peak: A prominent volcanic plug in the Mandara Mountains near Rhumsiki, Cameroon. The peak illustrates the range’s rugged volcanic landforms.
Sahel: A semiarid transition zone between the Sahara Desert and the wetter savannas farther south. The mountains rise within the Sahel’s dry regional setting.
Sorghum: A drought-tolerant cereal crop cultivated for grain, forage, and other uses. Sorghum supports agriculture in the region’s seasonal rainfall.
