Mandate of Heaven

The Chinese doctrine that Heaven grants rulers legitimacy and may withdraw it when they govern unjustly. It helped explain dynastic succession and political rebellion.

Tian: A Chinese concept of Heaven as a cosmic and moral power, interpreted differently across traditions. The Mandate derives its authority from Tian, whose approval legitimizes a ruler.
Zhou dynasty: A Chinese ruling house that governed from the eleventh century BCE to 256 BCE. The Zhou promoted the Mandate to justify their conquest of the Shang.
Confucius: A Chinese teacher and thinker whose sayings became the basis of Confucian traditions. His emphasis on moral government developed within a political world shaped by the Mandate.
Yellow Turban Rebellion: A major uprising against the late Han dynasty that began in 184 CE. Its leaders invoked a coming transformation of the cosmic and political order.
Divine right of kings: A doctrine that a monarch’s authority is granted directly by God and is not subject to earthly challenge. Unlike many versions of divine right, the Mandate permits legitimacy to pass after misrule.
Dynastic cycle: A recurring pattern in Chinese historiography in which dynasties rise, decline, and are replaced. The cycle describes how a dynasty’s loss of Heaven’s favor could explain its fall.
Shang dynasty: A Bronze Age Chinese dynasty known from oracle-bone inscriptions and archaeological remains. The Zhou portrayed the Shang’s final ruler as having forfeited Heaven’s approval.
Mencius: A Confucian philosopher who argued that rulers must care for the people to govern legitimately. He made popular welfare a powerful test of whether a ruler retained Heaven’s approval.
Taiping Rebellion: A nineteenth-century civil war in China led by the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. The rebellion challenged Qing legitimacy with a religious claim to a new heavenly order.
Legalism: A Chinese political philosophy emphasizing centralized authority, clear laws, and rewards and punishments. Legalist statecraft grounds control in institutions rather than Heaven’s moral approval.
