Manganate

Manganate commonly denotes the green oxyanion MnO₄²⁻, in which manganese has oxidation state +6. It forms salts and can be oxidized to permanganate or reduced to manganese dioxide.

Manganese: A transition metal with atomic number 25 and several chemically accessible oxidation states. Its +6 oxidation state defines the central atom in the manganate ion.
Oxyanion: A negatively charged ion containing oxygen bonded to another element. Manganate is one member of this broad class of ions.
Oxidation: A chemical process in which a species loses electrons or increases its oxidation state. Converting manganate to permanganate is an oxidation by one electron per manganese.
