Knowra Manganese dioxide Manganese dioxide Manganese dioxide (MnO₂) is an inorganic compound in which manganese is bonded to oxygen. It occurs naturally as pyrolusite and is used in batteries, catalysts, and chemical processes.
Zinc–carbon battery : A primary battery that uses zinc as the anode and manganese dioxide as the cathode material. Manganese dioxide acts as the principal depolarizing cathode material in this widely used cell.
Manganese oxidation states : The formal charge states manganese adopts in compounds, commonly including +2, +3, +4, and +7. Manganese is formally +4 in MnO₂, but reduction changes its state during reactions and battery discharge.
Pyrolusite : The common natural mineral form of manganese dioxide, typically crystallizing in a tetragonal structure. Pyrolusite is the principal mineral species corresponding to MnO₂.
Manganese(III) oxide : An inorganic manganese oxide with the formula Mn₂O₃, in which manganese is principally in the +3 oxidation state. Its manganese oxidation state and oxygen ratio differ from those of MnO₂.
Alkaline battery : A primary battery using zinc and manganese dioxide electrodes in an alkaline electrolyte. Its cathode combines manganese dioxide with conductive carbon to support discharge.
Crystal structure : The ordered three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in a crystalline solid. MnO₂ occurs in several structures whose tunnels and layers affect ion movement and reactivity.
Manganese oxide minerals : Naturally occurring minerals composed chiefly of manganese and oxygen, often with water or other elements. Pyrolusite belongs to a diverse family of manganese oxides and hydroxides.
Manganese(II,III) oxide : The mixed-valence manganese oxide Mn₃O₄, containing manganese in both +2 and +3 states. This mixed-valence oxide is chemically distinct from manganese dioxide's nominal +4 compound.
Lithium–manganese dioxide battery : A primary lithium battery whose cathode material is manganese dioxide. This specialized cell uses manganese dioxide with lithium metal for high energy density.
Rutile structure : A tetragonal crystal structure adopted by minerals including rutile and the MnO₂ polymorph pyrolusite. Pyrolusite's rutile-type arrangement places manganese and oxygen in a distinctive framework.
