Mannheim

Mannheim is a city in southwestern Germany, in Baden-Württemberg, at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar rivers. Its central streets form a distinctive grid known as the Quadratestadt.

Rhine: The Rhine is a major European river flowing from the Swiss Alps through western Europe to the North Sea. Mannheim stands on the Rhine’s eastern bank near its meeting with the Neckar.

Charles III Philip, Elector Palatine: Charles III Philip was Elector Palatine from 1716 to 1742 and transferred his court to Mannheim. His relocation helped establish Mannheim as the Palatinate’s political center.
Mannheim School: The Mannheim School was an eighteenth-century musical movement associated with the court orchestra in Mannheim. The city’s court supported an orchestra whose style influenced European music.
Quadratestadt: Quadratestadt is Mannheim’s central district, laid out in blocks identified by letters and numbers rather than conventional street names. This grid gives Mannheim’s historic center its distinctive address system.
Mannheim Water Tower: The Mannheim Water Tower is a monumental water-storage tower completed in 1889 at Friedrichsplatz. The tower and its surrounding square are prominent symbols of the city.
