Manorialism

Manorialism was a medieval system of rural landholding and labor organized around estates controlled by lords. It linked a manor’s land, dependent laborers, and local obligations.

Manor: A landed estate that formed the basic unit of rural production and authority in much of medieval Europe. The manor was the estate around which manorial land and obligations were organized.
Feudalism: A set of medieval political and military relationships involving landholding, lordship, and obligations. Manorialism concerned rural estates, while feudalism describes broader relationships among lords and vassals.
Late Roman Empire: The Roman state in its final centuries in western Europe and the eastern Mediterranean. Late Roman rural estates and dependent labor formed part of the background to later arrangements.
English Peasants' Revolt of 1381: A major uprising in England involving demands against taxation, serfdom, and social hierarchy. Its participants challenged labor controls and obligations rooted partly in estate society.
Demesne: The portion of an estate reserved for a lord’s direct use and cultivation. Its crops and labor dues supported the lord’s household.
Serfdom: A condition in which peasants were legally bound to land or a lord and owed customary services. Serfdom shaped the personal and legal constraints on many manor tenants.
Carolingian Empire: A Frankish empire ruled by the Carolingian dynasty, reaching its height under Charlemagne. Carolingian estate records document forms of rural labor and dues that resemble later manorial practices.
Commutation of labor services: The replacement of required work with money payments or other forms of rent. Commutation reduced the direct labor claims that linked tenants to demesnes.
Villein: A legally unfree peasant in medieval England who held land in return for dues and services. Villeins supplied labor and payments under many English manorial arrangements.
Peasant: A rural cultivator who worked land, often as a tenant or smallholder. Peasants formed the workforce and tenant population of manorial estates.
