Manufacturing is the large-scale transformation of materials into finished goods using labor, tools, and machinery. It includes production systems ranging from assembly lines to highly automated factories.

Production line: A sequence of workstations through which a product moves as successive tasks are performed. It organizes manufacturing into ordered operations, often with each station repeating a specialized task.
Industrial Revolution: The transition to mechanized production and industrial economies that began in Britain in the eighteenth century. It established the factory system and machinery-based production at unprecedented scale.
Automotive industry: The industry that designs, produces, and sells motor vehicles and their components. Vehicle production combines large-scale assembly with tightly coordinated parts supply.
Craft production: The making of goods primarily by skilled individuals or small groups using specialized knowledge and tools. It contrasts factory scale and standardization with individualized, skill-intensive production.
Division of labor: The division of production into specialized tasks assigned to different workers or stages. Manufacturing scale often depends on breaking complex work into repeatable operations.
Machining: A manufacturing process that removes material from a workpiece using cutting tools. It turns stock material into precise parts through controlled material removal.
Richard Arkwright: An English inventor and industrialist associated with the water frame and early factory organization. His textile mills helped demonstrate how machinery and centralized labor could expand output.
Semiconductor manufacturing: The fabrication of integrated circuits through processes such as lithography, deposition, and etching. Chip production requires exceptionally controlled processes and specialized equipment.
Mass production: The production of large quantities of standardized goods, commonly using specialized equipment and repetitive tasks. It is a specific manufacturing strategy built around high volume and uniform products.
Taylorism: A management approach that analyzes and standardizes tasks to improve labor productivity. It applied measurement and managerial control to factory work.
