Manuscript culture

Manuscript culture is the production, copying, collecting, and circulation of handwritten texts. It encompasses the material practices and social institutions that shaped how texts were made and used.

Scribal culture: The practices and social roles involved in writing and copying texts by hand. Scribes produced and transmitted texts through the central labor of manuscript culture.
Papyrus: A writing material made from strips of the papyrus plant, widely used around the ancient Mediterranean. Papyrus sheets supplied a major writing surface for ancient manuscripts.
Illuminated manuscript: A manuscript decorated with painted images, ornament, or gold and silver leaf. Illumination joined textual transmission with visual expression and patronage.
Textual criticism: The study of textual variants to reconstruct or interpret the history of a written work. Copying errors and revisions make manuscript witnesses essential evidence for establishing texts.
Scriptorium: A room or workshop where scribes copied and produced manuscripts, often within a monastery. Organized scriptoria concentrated manuscript production in some medieval institutions.
Parchment: A durable writing material made from prepared animal skin. Parchment enabled the folded leaves and long-lasting copies used in many codices.
Gutenberg Bible: A Latin Bible printed by Johannes Gutenberg's workshop in Mainz in the mid-fifteenth century. Its production shows how printing began to compete with the labor of manuscript copying.
Transmission of the New Testament: The copying and preservation history of New Testament writings across manuscripts and other witnesses. Its many manuscript variants illustrate how texts changed during handwritten transmission.
Codex: A book made of bound leaves, the format that largely replaced the ancient scroll in many regions. The codex made handwritten texts easier to browse, annotate, and bind together.
Book of Kells: An elaborately illuminated Gospel book, probably produced around 800 in a Columban monastery. Its richly decorated pages exemplify the artistic possibilities of medieval manuscript production.
