Marco Polo Bridge Incident

A clash between Chinese and Japanese troops near Beijing on July 7, 1937, that escalated into the Second Sino-Japanese War.

Japanese invasion of Manchuria: Japan’s 1931 seizure of Manchuria, followed by the creation of the puppet state of Manchukuo. Its success encouraged further Japanese military pressure in North China.
Wanping Fortress: A walled town beside the Yongding River, near the site of the 1937 clash. Japanese demands to enter Wanping after a missing soldier triggered the immediate standoff.
Song Zheyuan: A Chinese general and political leader who commanded forces in the Beijing-Tianjin region in 1937. His forces faced the Japanese military around Wanping and the bridge.
Battle of Beiping-Tianjin: The July 1937 Japanese campaign that captured Beiping and Tianjin from Chinese forces. It followed the incident and brought Japanese control over the region around Beijing.

Lugou Bridge: A stone bridge over the Yongding River, also known as the Marco Polo Bridge. The incident took its name from this bridge, where Chinese and Japanese troops exchanged fire.
Qin Dechun: A Chinese general who served as deputy commander of the North China region in 1937. He took part in negotiations over the Japanese demands after the clash.
Battle of Shanghai: A major 1937 battle between Chinese and Japanese forces in and around Shanghai. Its outbreak expanded the conflict far beyond the Beijing area.
Mukden Incident: A 1931 explosion on a Japanese-owned railway in Manchuria used by Japan as a pretext to invade the region. Unlike the disputed origins of this clash, the Mukden Incident was deliberately staged by Japanese officers.
