Marcomannic Wars

The Marcomannic Wars were a series of conflicts from 166 to 180 in which the Roman Empire fought the Marcomanni and allied peoples along the Danube frontier.

Antonine Plague: A devastating epidemic that spread through the Roman Empire during the reigns of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. The epidemic weakened Roman manpower and resources as conflict intensified on the frontier.
Marcus Aurelius: Roman emperor from 161 to 180, known for his philosophical writings and long military campaigns. He directed Rome’s response and spent much of his reign campaigning on the Danube.
Siege of Aquileia: An attack on the Roman city of Aquileia during the Marcomannic Wars, repelled by Roman forces. The siege showed how far invading forces could penetrate into northern Italy.
Sarmatian War: The Roman campaign against the Iazyges, a Sarmatian people, during the Marcomannic Wars. The campaign ended with a Roman victory and plans for settlement that Marcus Aurelius did not complete.
Marcomanni: A Germanic people who lived north of the middle Danube and fought Rome during the second century. Their incursions gave the wars their name and helped trigger the conflict.
Lucius Verus: Roman emperor who ruled jointly with Marcus Aurelius from 161 until his death in 169. His eastern war ended shortly before the Danube crisis began.
Battle of Laugaricio: A Roman victory over the Quadi in 179, commemorated by an inscription at Trenčín. Its inscription is unusually direct evidence for a campaign fought during the wars.
Roman–Germanic relations: The changing political, military, and economic relations between Rome and Germanic peoples. The wars intensified both conflict and negotiated cooperation across the northern frontier.
Quadi: A Germanic people who lived in the region of present-day Slovakia and Moravia. The Quadi were among Rome’s principal opponents alongside the Marcomanni.
Legio II Adiutrix: A Roman legion founded in 70 CE and stationed for much of its history at Aquincum. Its base guarded a key sector of the frontier facing the peoples involved in the wars.
