Marie Byrd Land

A large region of West Antarctica between the Ross Ice Shelf and the Antarctic Peninsula. It is not claimed by any country under the Antarctic Treaty System.

West Antarctica: The part of Antarctica lying mainly west of the Transantarctic Mountains, including the Antarctic Peninsula and the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. Marie Byrd Land occupies a broad sector of this Antarctic region.
Richard E. Byrd: An American naval officer and explorer who led several expeditions to Antarctica in the twentieth century. His expeditions explored the region later named for his wife.
Siple Dome: An ice dome in Marie Byrd Land where deep ice cores have preserved records of past climate. Its ice-core record provides direct evidence of regional climate history.
Thwaites Glacier: A large West Antarctic glacier that drains ice into the Amundsen Sea and is undergoing rapid change. Its retreat affects the wider ice-sheet system adjoining Marie Byrd Land.
Ross Ice Shelf: The world’s largest ice shelf, floating in the Ross Sea and fed by glaciers from Antarctica. Its western edge forms one boundary of Marie Byrd Land.
First Byrd Antarctic Expedition: Richard E. Byrd’s 1928–1930 expedition that explored and mapped parts of Antarctica, including areas of Marie Byrd Land. It helped establish knowledge of the territory bearing Byrd’s name.
Mount Erebus: An active volcano on Ross Island in Antarctica, known for its persistent lava lake. Its volcanic setting offers a comparison with Marie Byrd Land’s volcanic province.
Pine Island Glacier: A major West Antarctic glacier flowing into the Amundsen Sea, with a rapidly thinning ice shelf. Its evolution offers a nearby comparison for ice loss along West Antarctica’s coast.
Antarctic Peninsula: A long mountainous extension of Antarctica toward the southern tip of South America. Marie Byrd Land lies to the west of this peninsula.
Edith Ronne: An American Antarctic explorer who participated in the 1947–1948 Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition. Her expedition’s work contributed to mapping the region’s western extent.
