Marija Gimbutas

Marija Gimbutas (1921–1994) was a Lithuanian-American archaeologist and prehistorian whose research on Neolithic and Bronze Age Europe shaped debates about Indo-European origins and prehistoric religion.

V. Gordon Childe: An Australian archaeologist who proposed influential models of prehistoric social and economic change. Childe’s diffusionist prehistory helped shape the intellectual setting in which Gimbutas worked.
Kurgan hypothesis: The hypothesis that Proto-Indo-European speakers originated on the Pontic-Caspian steppe and spread through migrations. This is Gimbutas’s best-known model for the dispersal of Indo-European languages.
Archaeological culture: A recurring pattern of artifacts and practices used to classify archaeological remains across places and periods. Gimbutas’s regional syntheses relied on identifying and comparing archaeological cultures.
Old European culture: Gimbutas’s term for Neolithic and Copper Age societies of southeastern and central Europe before the proposed steppe incursions. Her reconstruction of this culture became the basis for her account of prehistoric Europe.
James Patrick Mallory: An archaeologist and Indo-Europeanist known for scholarship on Indo-European origins and migrations. Mallory later assessed archaeological evidence for the steppe hypothesis Gimbutas advanced.
Pontic-Caspian steppe: A grassland region north of the Black and Caspian seas. Gimbutas identified this region as the homeland of the proposed Kurgan expansions.
Neolithic Europe: The period and societies associated with the spread of farming across Europe, beginning at different times by region. Much of Gimbutas’s research traced European societies before and during the arrival of steppe groups.
Goddess movement: A modern spiritual and cultural movement that centers female divinity and goddess traditions. Gimbutas’s interpretations of prehistoric female figures became influential in goddess spirituality.
Colin Renfrew: A British archaeologist who proposed that Indo-European languages spread with early farming from Anatolia. Renfrew offered a prominent alternative to Gimbutas’s proposed steppe homeland.
Kurgan: A burial mound built over a grave, especially one associated with prehistoric Eurasian steppe cultures. Burial mounds supplied archaeological evidence central to Gimbutas’s model.
