Marine benthic zone

The marine benthic zone is the ecological region at the seabed, including its surface and subsurface. Its conditions range from sunlit coastal sediments to the cold, high-pressure deep sea.

Benthic ecology: The study of organisms living on, in, or closely associated with aquatic bottoms. It provides the ecological framework for studying communities across marine seabeds.
Marine snow: A continuous shower of organic particles that sinks through the water column toward the deep sea. It transports surface-derived food to benthic organisms far below the sunlit ocean.
Benthic habitat mapping: The classification and spatial depiction of seafloor habitats using observations and survey data. Mapping identifies seabed features that support distinct ecological communities.
Coral reef: A marine ecosystem built primarily by reef-forming corals and their calcium carbonate structures. Reefs form complex benthic habitat that supports exceptionally diverse communities.
Pelagic zone: The open-water region of an aquatic environment, away from the bottom and shore. It contrasts the seabed habitat with the water column above it.
Bioturbation: The mixing of sediment by animals through burrowing, feeding, and movement. Seabed animals reshape sediments and alter oxygen and nutrient distributions.
Marine protected area: A geographically defined marine space managed to conserve nature and associated cultural values. Protection can target vulnerable benthic habitats and their resident species.
Seagrass meadow: A coastal marine habitat formed by flowering plants rooted in shallow underwater sediments. Its rooted seabed vegetation stabilizes sediment and creates habitat for benthic life.
Continental shelf: The shallow, gently sloping submerged edge of a continent, extending to the shelf break. Its broad, relatively shallow seabed supports productive benthic habitats.
Chemosynthesis: The production of organic matter using energy from chemical reactions rather than sunlight. It supports communities where vent and seep fluids provide chemical energy.
