Scientific realism : The view that well-supported scientific theories describe a mind-independent world, including entities that cannot be directly observed. Bunge treated realism as a foundation for science rather than an optional interpretation of its theories.
Scientific method : A set of practices for developing and testing claims through observation, measurement, reasoning, and experiment. Bunge treated method as organized, theory-guided inquiry rather than a single mechanical recipe.
Karl Popper : An Austrian-British philosopher who argued that scientific theories should be exposed to attempted refutation. Bunge shared Popper’s opposition to dogmatism but disputed aspects of his account of scientific method.
Philosophy of psychology : The philosophical study of psychological concepts, methods, explanations, and their relation to the brain. Bunge argued for a scientific psychology grounded in brain processes rather than mental substance.
