Maritime Silk Road

The Maritime Silk Road was a network of sea routes linking East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East through trade and cultural exchange.

Indian Ocean trade: A long-running system of commercial exchange linking societies around the Indian Ocean. The Maritime Silk Road formed a major eastern network within this broader system.
Han dynasty: A Chinese imperial dynasty that ruled from 206 BCE to 220 CE, interrupted by the Xin dynasty. Han expansion and maritime contacts helped establish early long-distance trade from China.
Silk trade: The production and exchange of silk across regional and long-distance commercial networks. Silk was one of the valuable goods associated with the route, though not its only cargo.

Melaka Sultanate: A Malay sultanate centered on Melaka that flourished as a trading power in the fifteenth century. Melaka grew powerful by controlling a strategic maritime crossroads.
Trans-Saharan trade: Trade across the Sahara that connected North Africa with West African states and markets. It was a distinct long-distance trade system based on desert caravans rather than sea lanes.
