Marker pen

A writing and drawing instrument that delivers ink through a porous or felt tip. Markers vary in tip shape, ink chemistry, and intended surface.

Felt tip: A porous nib made from compressed fibers that carries liquid ink to a writing surface. Its absorbent fibers hold and release the ink at the marker’s point.
Marker reservoir: The internal space or absorbent material that stores a marker’s ink. It supplies ink to the tip as the marker is used.
Highlighter: A translucent fluorescent marker used to emphasize text without obscuring it. It adapts marker technology for highlighting printed or handwritten passages.
Ballpoint pen: A pen that transfers viscous ink through a rotating metal ball at its tip. Its ball mechanism differs from the porous ink-delivery system of a marker.
Capillary action: The movement of liquid through narrow spaces caused by surface tension and adhesive forces. It draws ink from the reservoir through the porous tip.
Nib (writing instrument): The part of a writing instrument that contacts a surface and delivers its marking material. Marker nibs shape the line and regulate ink transfer.
Paint marker: A marker that dispenses opaque paint through a valve or porous tip. It applies visible marks to materials where ordinary ink may not cover the surface.
Fountain pen: A refillable pen that feeds liquid ink to a nib through a reservoir and feed system. A fountain pen uses a shaped nib and feed rather than a felt or porous tip.
Ink: A liquid or paste containing colorants and other ingredients, used to create marks on a surface. Marker performance depends on the ink’s colorants, solvents, and flow properties.
Porous material: A solid containing connected or isolated pores that can hold or transmit fluids. Porosity lets marker components retain ink and move it toward the tip.
