Markus Wolf

Markus Wolf was an East German intelligence official who led the Stasi’s foreign intelligence service, the Hauptverwaltung Aufklärung, from 1952 to 1986.

Hauptverwaltung Aufklärung: The Stasi’s foreign intelligence service, responsible for espionage outside East Germany. Wolf directed this organization for more than three decades.
Friedrich Wolf: A German-Jewish physician, playwright, and communist whose works included the drama Professor Mamlock. Markus Wolf was born into the family of this prominent communist writer.
Erich Mielke: The East German minister for state security from 1957 to 1989. Mielke headed the ministry that housed Wolf’s foreign intelligence service.
Ostpolitik: West Germany’s policy of improving relations with East Germany and other Eastern European states. The opening created by détente also gave Wolf’s service new opportunities for access.
Stasi: East Germany’s Ministry for State Security, responsible for domestic surveillance and foreign intelligence. Wolf’s foreign service operated within this wider state-security ministry.
Moscow: The capital of Russia and a major political center of the Soviet Union. Wolf spent part of his youth in Soviet exile after his family fled Nazi Germany.
Günter Guillaume: An East German intelligence agent who served as an aide to West German chancellor Willy Brandt. Guillaume was recruited and dispatched during Wolf’s leadership.
German reunification: The 1990 process that ended the division of Germany and incorporated East Germany into the Federal Republic. Reunification exposed Wolf’s former service to investigation and public scrutiny.
Romeo agent: An intelligence operative who cultivates a romantic relationship to recruit or influence a target. Wolf’s service used romantic approaches to penetrate West German government offices.
Nazi Germany: The German state under Adolf Hitler’s dictatorship from 1933 to 1945. His family’s flight from Nazi persecution preceded his later intelligence career.
