Knowra Mars rover Mars rover A robotic vehicle designed to travel across Mars’s surface and examine its geology and environment. Rovers combine mobility, remote sensing, and onboard instruments to conduct science far from Earth.
Rover mobility system : The wheels, suspension, steering, and drive components that let a rover cross uneven terrain. Its wheel and suspension design determines which Martian slopes, rocks, and soil the rover can traverse.
Sojourner : NASA’s first Mars rover, a small vehicle that explored the Ares Vallis landing site in 1997. Its Pathfinder mission demonstrated that a rover could operate on Mars and investigate nearby rocks.
Viking program : NASA’s 1970s Mars program, which sent two orbiters and two stationary landers to the planet. Viking landers established robotic surface science before mobile exploration was practical.
Mars geology : The study of Mars’s rocks, minerals, landforms, and geological history. Rover traverses connect observations of individual rocks to the planet’s environmental history.
Mars lander : A spacecraft designed to reach the Martian surface and operate from a fixed location. Unlike a lander, a rover can visit multiple sites and compare their geology directly.
Deep-space communication : The transmission of data and commands between spacecraft and Earth across interplanetary distances. Communication delays prevent direct joystick control, so rover operations rely on planned command sequences.
Spirit (rover) : NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover that operated in Gusev Crater from 2004 until 2010. Spirit’s long traverse and wheel failures revealed both the reach and limits of rover fieldwork.
Mars Pathfinder : NASA’s 1997 mission that delivered the Sojourner rover and a lander to Mars. Pathfinder tested low-cost landing and rover technologies that shaped later missions.
Astrobiology : The study of life in the universe, including its origins, evolution, and possible distribution beyond Earth. Rovers search for geological evidence of environments that might once have supported microbial life.
Mars orbiter : A spacecraft that circles Mars to study the planet or relay communications from its orbit. Orbiters survey broad regions, while rovers make close measurements at selected surface sites.
