Marshall Field

Marshall Field (1834–1906) was an American merchant who founded the Chicago department-store company that bore his name and helped shape modern retailing.

Potter Palmer: Potter Palmer (1826–1902) was a Chicago merchant and real-estate developer who helped establish the city’s major department stores. Palmer brought Field into the Chicago dry-goods business and later sold him his stake.
Potter Palmer's Dry Goods Store: Potter Palmer’s Chicago dry-goods business was a prominent nineteenth-century retailer and the starting point of Field’s Chicago career. Field joined Palmer’s store in 1865, beginning the business relationship that led to his own firm.

Field, Leiter & Company: Field, Leiter & Company was the Chicago dry-goods partnership formed by Marshall Field and Levi Z. Leiter in 1867. This partnership was the direct predecessor of the business Field later controlled alone.
Customer Service: Customer service is assistance and treatment provided to people before, during, and after a purchase. Field’s store became associated with a service standard summarized by the phrase “Give the lady what she wants.”
University of Chicago: The University of Chicago is a private research university established in Chicago in 1890. Field contributed to the university’s founding endowment.
John G. Shedd: John G. Shedd (1850–1926) was an American retail executive who led Marshall Field & Company after Field’s death. Shedd carried forward the company’s operations and later endowed Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium.
Great Chicago Fire: The Great Chicago Fire was an October 1871 urban fire that destroyed much of central Chicago. The fire destroyed Field and Leiter’s store, but the partners rebuilt and resumed business.
