Marthanda Varma

Marthanda Varma (c. 1706–1758) was the ruler of Venad who expanded and centralized his kingdom as Travancore, defeating the Dutch East India Company at Colachel in 1741.

Battle of Colachel: A 1741 battle in which Travancore forces defeated the Dutch East India Company near Colachel on India’s Malabar Coast. Marthanda Varma’s victory there checked Dutch expansion and became the defining military episode of his reign.
